| Secondary education takes place in secondary schools and is the stage of education following primary education. In some countries, only primary or basic education is compulsory, but secondary education is included in compulsory education in most countries. If students go on to another stage of education, this is post-secondary or tertiary education and consists of higher education (college or university), or further education / continuing education. Depending on the country, secondary schools may be called high schools, gymnasia, lyceums, middle schools, sixth-form, sixth-form colleges, vocational schools, or preparatory schools, and the exact meaning of any of these varies between the countries. |
